An exploration of trends in normalized weather-related catastrophe losses

چکیده
In order to evaluate potential trends in global natural catastrophe losses, it is important to compensate for changes in asset values and exposures over time. We create a Global Normalized Catastrophe Catalogue covering weatherrelated catastrophe losses in the principal developed (Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea, United States) and developing (Caribbean, Central America, China, India, the Philippines) regions of the world. We survey losses from 1950 through 2005, although data availability means that for many regions the record is incomplete for the period before the 1970s even for the largest events. After 1970, when the global record becomes more comprehensive, we find evidence of an annual upward trend for normalized losses of 2%per year. Conclusions are heavily weighted byUS losses, and their removal eliminates any statistically significant trend. Large events, such as Hurricane Katrina and China flood losses in the 1990s, also exert a strong impact on trend results. In addition, once national losses are further normalized relative to per capita wealth, the significance of the post-1970 global trend disappears. We find insufficient evidence to claim a statistical relationship between global temperature increase and normalized catastrophe losses.

approved: Prasad Tadepalli Severe weather in the United States causes huge insured losses to crop and property frequently. It creates major impact and elicit diverse response in the weather insurance industry. Events like hail, storm, hurricane etc. are more likely to cause catastrophe losses. So it becomes crucial to collect and analyze these extreme weather information. Thus, weather data col...
متن کاملEvaluation of effective factors in window optimization of fry analysis to identify mineralization pattern: Case study of Bavanat region, Iran
The known ore deposits and mineralization trends are important key exploration criteria in mineral exploration within a specific region. Fry analysis has conventionally been considered as a suitable method to determine the mineralization trends related to linear structures. Based upon literature sources, to date, no investigation has been carried out that includes the Sensitivity Analysis of Fe...
متن کاملNormalized Earthquake Damage and Fatalities in the United States: 1900–2005
Damage estimates from 80 U.S. earthquakes since 1900 are “normalized” to 2005 dollars by adjusting for inflation, increases in wealth, and changes in population. Factors accounting for mitigation at 1 and 2% loss reduction per year are also considered. The earthquake damage record is incomplete, perhaps by up to 25% of total events that cause damage, but all of the most damaging events are acco...
متن کاملComparison of derivative-based methods by normalized standard deviation approach for edge detection of gravity anomalies
This paper describes the application of the so-called normalized standard deviation (NSTD) method to detect edges of gravity anomalies. Using derivative-based methods enhances the anomaly edges, leading to significant improvement of the interpretation of the geological features. There are many methods for enhancing the edges, most of which are high-pass filters based on the horizontal or vertic...
متن کاملMitigating Losses from Climate Change through Insurance
Climate change potentially amplifies catastrophe risks by raising the magnitude and frequency of certain extreme events in the long term. Its crucial feature is irreversibility. The availability and affordability of insurance will also be diminished in the presence of climate change. Weather losses can be mitigated by actions of the policyholder; however, the private returns from many mitigatio...
